Dawn Luyendyk attended Stockton (Delta) College, Sacramento City College and Napa Valley College. She holds a full-time Clear Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential for Older Adults. She has attended numerous trainings in Geriatrics, Alzheimer Awareness, Teaching Strategies and Methodologies for serving the older adult population.
Dawn was a fitness teacher in the Older Adults Department at Napa Valley Adult Education (NVAE) from 1992- 2010, when she retired. From 1995 –2010, she also served as lead teacher for that department. Her responsibilities included teacher training, mentoring, scheduling of classes, accountability, materials coordination, and collaboration with 20-30 retirement centers such as the Napa City Senior Activity Center and the California Veterans Home. She provided a wide array of challenging, appropriate and excellently-delivered courses. She monitored teachers and provided professional development where needed.
Dawn was an active member of the Older Adults Network, has hosted those meetings at NVAE, presented at conferences (specifically the CCAE Winter Conference), and has always been willing and eager to share her vast experience and knowledge in teaching and working with the older adult population. She has served on numerous committees and volunteered for school-wide functions including Open House and the WASC Accreditation process. For many years, she organized and hosted the―Older Adult Student of the Year celebration at the Napa Senior Activity Center where many dignitaries from around the Napa Valley came to pay tribute to these remarkable students and to crown the winner. She continues to be active in the―Napa Senior Games and for many years was a solid volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Weekend Camp. Dawn can still be counted on to help out wherever needed.
Dawn has served as Historian and as Treasurer for the CCAE North Coast Chapter, and has received the CCAE Bay Section and state CCAE―Excellence in Teaching Award. She was and continues to be an active volunteer for CCAE Chapter events, such as the Annual Wine Auction. In 1999, Dawn received the Napa Valley Adult Education―Teacher of the Year award chosen through peer nominations (according to specific criteria) and judged by the Napa Valley Adult Education Community Advisory Committee. Some comments from Dawn’s students: “Dawn listens to any question or comment from students and, with a smile, she answers them all, no matter how menial or small, making everyone feel special.” “Her gentle reminders help so often, and always with that special smile or laugh that makes you feel that she really cares.” “There are not enough superlatives to write about Dawn, we are all so lucky to have the privilege of being in her classes. I am so grateful.”
Fellow teachers said, “Her continuous enthusiasm is exemplary as she provides a great role model to all in terms of dedication, expertise and kindness that are all very important in working with older adults.”
She was a dedicated, enthusiastic and effective teacher and lead teacher in the NVAE Older Adults Program for eighteen years. She continues to be a well loved and a tireless advocate and supporter of the older adult population and of CCAE in the Napa Valley community. Dawn certainly has earned CCAE’s Life Membership award.
As a lifetime educator, Margaret Scott began her
career in adult education in 1986 when she was
hired to teach mathematics in the Mt. Diablo Adult Education’s High School and
Basic Education Programs. Having a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics with a Secondary Education Certificate, she was well prepared for this assignment, yet Margaret continued her education to obtain an Adult Education
Credential.
Committed to the concepts of professional development and peer support, Margaret joined CCAE shortly after and has been a member for over 24 years. A
gifted teacher with energy, optimism, creativity and deep respect for teachers
and learners, Margaret was selected to be Program Coordinator for the Adult
Basic Education/Adult Secondary Education (ASE/ABE) Department in 1996.
Her leadership skills and dedication to set high standards for all students, while
assuring multiple teaching strategies and support for learners, resulted in new
practices under which the ASE/ABE program flourished. During this time she
encouraged her teaching staff to take advantage of local, Bay Section and State
CCAE professional development opportunities.
Margaret continued her own education by obtaining her Administrative Credential and became a Vice Principal at Mt. Diablo Adult Education in 2005. In addition to administering the ASE/ABE/GED programs, she also supervised the Career Technical Education Program and the Lifelong Education Programs. Her
vision and commitment to lifelong learning were key components that helped
her guide all these program areas to focus on student outcomes.
After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from San Francisco
State University, Susanne Wong began her
career as an elementary school teacher.
Later, Susanne returned to school to earn a
Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership
from California State University, Hayward.
When Susanne transitioned into adult education, she started out as a Parent
Education Instructor. She served as the Broadmoor Parent Cooperative Preschool Instructor and Director for many years. Later, she became the Career
Technical Education, Parent Education and Older Adult Program Coordinator.
Susanne served as the Vice Principal and then the Principal of San Leandro
Adult School, positions she held for a total of over nineteen years.

Susanne served as the Vice Principal and then the Principal of San Leandro

During her tenure as Principal, Susanne established many partnerships with
local businesses and agencies. She started new programs such as the San
Leandro Adult School Even Start Family Literacy Program and the Adult Basic
Education Bridge Program. One of her biggest successes came to fruition
when, after years of planning and coordinating, she was able to have the San
Leandro Adult School Community Education Center built. This is the first site
dedicated to the San Leandro Adult School since its beginnings in 1928. Without Susanne, this building would not have been possible. However, her dedication to adult education extended beyond the San Leandro Adult School.
Throughout her career, Susanne has been and remains today a member in
professional organizations. She served as the ACSA VI District Representative, Regional Partnership Representative and an active member of CCAE.
Since 1986, Susanne has served CCAE in many ways. She was a Costanoan
Chapter Board Member, a Bay Section Board Member, the Bay Section President, the State Awards Chair, the Monterey State Conference Co-Chair in 2004
and most recently served as the Chair of the Food and Beverage Committee for
the 2011 CCAE/COABE National Conference in San Francisco. Susanne has
also served on the Older Adults Program Standards Committee and has been a
Program of Excellence Validation Team Member.
Although Susanne retired after over 30 years in education, she still works as a
consultant and advisor.
John Ballinger holds a Bachelor of
Arts degree in Physical Education with
a minor in Geography. He obtained a
Masters in Secondary Education and
possesses life credentials for Standard Secondary and Administrative
Services. John taught at the high school level for seven years and then spent
nine years as the Director of Student Activities. During this period of time he
also successfully coached several athletic teams.
John first worked in adult education in 1981–82 at Clovis Adult School as a
Learning Director for Community Education. He returned to Clovis Adult Education in 2000 as a Learning Director and became Principal the following year.
John retired in 2011 but remains active as a member of ACSA, CAEAA, and is still actively involved in the Central Section. John was the CCAE Central Section President in 2006–07, and along with Sally Fowler (Director of Fresno Adult School) and Marie Pinto (former Director of Tulare Adult School, served as co-chair of the infamous 2007 “Wild About Adult Education” state conference held in Fresno.
John is an extraordinary individual with a passion for adult education. John exudes an energy and enthusiasm for adult education that goes unrivaled. Upon
meeting him, you will immediately sense his passion for his students, staff, programs, and adult education in general.
John became a mentor to fellow adult school principals as he successfully confronted and overcame barriers that adult schools face. As a new principal, he
dealt with a significant budget deficit, lack of expected rigor in the school’s academic curriculum, and low staff morale. John quickly set about to remedy his
three greatest obstacles. He tackled the budget deficit head-on by creating a
plan to limit spending without damaging program offerings or teacher morale.
He created a curriculum task force team that increased the rigor in the academic program in preparation for the CAHSEE. And…John, as only John could
do, introduced the Peacock as the Clovis Adult Education school mascot. This
was the first time any Adult School had designed a Board-approved school
mascot to represent its students and staff. Other Adult Schools soon followed
his lead and adopted their own mascots. Staff morale soared and student attendance and achievement increased significantly. John advocated for his
teachers and made changes in district policy concerning teachers’ salaries and
retirement policies.
John is keenly aware of the issues and policies affecting Adult Education and
keeps abreast of government regulations relevant to the field. He continues to
be a strong advocate for programs and personnel in Adult Education and is a
regular participant in CCAE’s Legislative Day, speaking with local or area government officials.
John has been a member of CCAE since 2000–01 and is still actively involved.
Increasing staff involvement in CCAE was one of John’s goals when he became Principal at Clovis Adult Education. When he arrived, the CCAE chapter had been inactive for several years. With barbeques, ice cream socials,
and deafening peacock calls, John soon had 90% of his full-time instructors
and support staff registered as CCAE members. John became CCAE Central
Section’s President in 2005-06 and took a leadership role in the Fall Conference, Awards Dinner, and Legislative Day. His greatest contribution came as
past-president when he accepted the responsibility of co-chair of the CCAE
State Conference 2007 in Fresno. John’s magic touch was on everything. The
theme ―Wild about Adult Education became his cry. He was wildly instrumental
in carrying out a zealous marketing program, outrageous theme decorations,
and wildly creative entertainment/programs for the General Session, Awards
Luncheon and Awards Breakfast. The conference was a huge success, largely
due to the talent and enthusiasm of John Ballinger.
Have you ever asked your co-workers or friends for help, only to have them fail you at the last minute? Well, that wouldn’t have happened had you asked Nancy Compton.
Nancy began her career with Sacramento City Unified School District as an Administrative Secretary. While working, she put herself through school and earned her teaching credential.
She retired from Sacramento City Unified School District as an Administrative Secretary and came back to teach. She taught ROP office careers and ESL in Adult Education. Teaching was the beginning of her career in Adult Education. She served as an ESL and CBET coordinator. She spent the last 5 years of her career as Principal of Charles A. Jones Career & Education Center.
Nancy joined CCAE in 1992. She was very supportive of everything CCAE did. She always had an endless supply of students willing to participate in Leg Day. She chaired two state conferences held in Sacramento. She was able to retain WASC certification for six years, twice with no midterm review. Nancy was Northern Section President for two years. Before becoming President of Northern Section she held a number of offices, chaired numerous professional development activities and organized numerous celebratory activities. Additionally she chaired the CCAE state conference twice.
Ms. Compton obtained her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Vermont; her Master of Arts degree at the University of San Francisco; and her Administrative Credential at California State University, Sacramento, California.
Nancy has since gone into retirement, but she is far from “retired”. She stays active spending about half of the year in Florida with her son and grand-daughter and half in Sacramento with her children and grandchildren.
Annette Beck has dedicated over 33 years of her life
to education and San Bernardino Unified School District. In 1977 Annette started with the San Bernardino
City School as an instructional assistant. During a
period of budget cuts in the 1970’s, Annette ended up
applying to a law office and was hired as office manager/receptionist. Realizing that she needed to know
how to type, she took a class with adult education. Within a year, Annette
reapplied, was hired, and returned to work in the school system. Over the
years, Annette progressed through the clerical ranks of clerk, senior clerk, and
vice principal secretary.
In 1996 Annette made a job decision that changed her life. She was asked at
her interview if she was "ready to grow up" and the next day started working
for San Bernardino Adult School as the vice principal’s secretary. With encouragement from then principal, George Bohn, and vice principal, Charlie
Brown, she went back to college, received her vocational teaching credential,
and began teaching Office Skills and QuickBooks. She loved making a difference with the students. One of Annette’s talents is her organizational skills
and, consequently, was asked to assist with the CALPRO Regional Resource
Center and also with the accountability testing at the school. Annette later
became the manager of the resource center located at the San Bernardino
Adult School. Annette was instrumental in setting up the CASAS E-Testing
Lab at the school which in turn, increased the school’s pay points by at least
50%. She also worked with CASAS as an e-Test presenter and managed the
regions accountability meetings.
CCAE has been very lucky to have Annette as an active member since 1996.
She has been involved in fundraisers, hosted Christmas parties at her home,
and served as the Chapter Vice President, Chapter President, Chapter Past
President, and Chapter Treasurer. Annette helped with many section conferences locally and in conjunction with South Coast CCAE Section, both chairing committees and presenting. Annette was the State Awards Chairperson
from 2005 to 2009 and in 2008 was very involved with the State Conference
hosted by the Southern Section in San Diego. She loves the many people
that she met through CCAE.
Annette stays busy by watching her grandchildren, spending time with her
husband, helping her daughter with the salon and day spa in which she is a
partner, administering GED tests, and accepting occasional requests to be a
substitute teacher. She will never really retire!
Charlotte Crandall has been employed at San
Bernardino Adult School for 14 years. She was
employed as a clerical aide in the school’s medical programs and her past supervisors were Principal Charlie Brown and Vice-Principal Janice
Roselius. Last year, her responsibilities included
reporting to three separate administrators and
departments to supply support to Staff, Academics, and Adults with Disabilities.
For the past 12 years, Charlotte has been an active member of CCAE. Charlotte served as chapter secretary twice. She served on the social committee
numerous times and did so with great joy and accomplishment. She assisted
with not only one, but two major conferences – one year with the South Coast/Southern Section Joint Conference and, in 2007, was on the conference planning committee for the CCAE state conference held in San Diego. Charlotte
has also served as CCAE Chapter Historian. In 2009–10, she was chapter
president, and in 2010, served as Legislative Day representative.
