Local Activities

Fresno Art Museum
imgSince its inception as a regional arts center in 1948, the Fresno Art Museum has grown into an important museum of contemporary and modern art. As the only modern art museum between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the Fresno Art Museum is dedicated to serving the population of Central California. Exhibitions include a wide range of contemporary as well as modern works by local, national and international artists. It provides the region's 1.6 million residents with a forum for contemporary and modern issues. The museum presents exhibitions, films, concerts, lectures, docent tours and symposia to enlighten, provoke, educate and entertain its visitors.

Fresno Chafee Zoo
imgFresno Chaffee Zoo is located in center of Roeding Park in Fresno, California. In addition to animal displays, it is also the home of Ross Laird's Winged Wonders Bird Show. The mission of the Zoo is to provide a fun, unique and up-close experience that strengthens the bond between people and wildlife. Fresno Chaffee Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). In 2009, a permanent Stingray Bay exhibit was opened, funded by Measure Z. In the Rainforest exhibit, the former butterfly house (Maddis House) reopened as the Tropical Treasures exhibit in March 2009, featuring poison dart frogs and a sloth amongst other species.

 Fresno State Winery
imgThe Fresno State Winery strives to engage students in all aspects of the wine making profession. This process begins with vineyard consultations and wine-grape research that insures the winery receives the best possible fruit and ends with the students using state-of-the-art wine making procedures to make superior wine. These products can be purchased at the Fresno State Farmers Market. Monday–Friday: 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Saturday: 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Sunday: 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

Forestiere Underground Gardens
imgTake a subterranean journey to the Mediterranean—in the middle of California. Beneath the hot arid surface of the San Joaquin Valley, Baldasare Forestiere (1879–1946) began sculpting Forestiere Underground Gardens in the early 1900s. Excavating the hardpan by hand, he created a unique complex of underground rooms, passageways, and gardens that ramble throughout a 10.5 acre parcel. Forestiere spent 40 years sculpting this amazing underground complex. The site consists of interconnecting subterranean rooms, patios and courtyards with stonework and building techniques patterned after the ancient catacombs. Explore his five-room underground home, the auto tunnel running the length of the gardens and the multilevel aquarium. Forestiere adorned these areas with a unique variety of fruit-producing trees, including strawberry, mulberry, date palm, olive, quince, persimmon, and citrus bearing several kinds of fruit on a single tree.

Kearney Mansion
Finished at the turn of the 20th century, the Kearney Mansion is a Victorian extravaganza in French Renaissance style built for agricultural developer M. Theo Kearney. Featuring ornate furnishings, elaborate moldings, and French wallpapers, the home was intended as a caretaker's residence, but Kearney died before the main house could be completed. The house is a telling glimpse into the life of California's wealthy; its surrounding gardens, designed by landscape designer Rudolph Ulrich, are a gorgeous composition as well. They include picnicking facilities and play areas.

Legion of Valor Museum
First instituted in 1890, the Legion of Valor Museum pays tribute to military personnel who were honored for bravery and heroism in the highest degree. Members represent many of the United States' most trying conflicts. Their donated papers, photos, uniforms, artifacts, and citations detail a history of self-sacrifice and evoke both a somberness and a patriotic pride. The museum can be found within the stately Fresno Veterans Memorial Auditorium; a gift shop is available for souvenirs.

Meux Home
This turreted, Victorian home was constructed in 1889 for physician and Confederate surgeon, Dr. T.R. Meux. Comprised of ten rooms, and boasting a gingerbread-accented verandah, the Meux Home is considered a middle-class residence. Today, it features authentic period furnishings, and tours are conducted by costumed guides. Named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, the home was inhabited by Meux descendants until 1970. The property may be rented for weddings and receptions.

Shizen Japanese Garden
Shizen Japanese Garden is an anomaly in Fresno's arid climate, but somehow, it prospers and thrives anyway. Sections of the garden, spread across three acres, honor the four seasons and feature plants that come into their own during these particular quarters of the year. A koi pond, a thatched-roof tea house, meandering pathways, water features, a moon bridge, and landscaped beds all contribute to the overall effect, which is one of tranquility, peace, and natural beauty.

Day Trips

Kings Canyon & Sequoia National Parks
Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, home to both the largest giant sequoia trees in the world and a deep gorge of a canyon that rivals Yosemite Valley for awe-inspiring beauty. Sequoia & Kings Canyon are separate parks snuggled next to each other and managed jointly. Combined, they outsize Yosemite. Peaks stretch across 1,350 square miles and include 14,505-foot Mount Whitney, the tallest point in the lower 48 states. These parks are also home to the Kaweah Range, a string of stark and magnificently beautiful mountains nestled among the Sierra. Three powerful rivers, the Kings, Kern, and Kaweah, tumble through the parks. Despite their large size, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks attract less than half the number of Yosemite's annual visitors, making them a great alternative for those looking to avoid huge crowds.

Yosemite National Park
Yosemite covers 1,169 square miles—roughly the size of Rhode Island—and 94% is designated wilderness. Here you can enjoy the quiet beauty of a forest or a pristine meadow, observe a sunset from a towering granite cliff, hike a half-mile-high waterfall, enjoy a moonlit night that's as bright as day, climb a world-famous rock, and eat a gourmet meal before falling asleep—be it under the stars or in the luxurious bed of a top-rated hotel.
