CCAE South Coast Section Report

February 4, 2012
Submitted by Steve Curiel, CCAE South Coast Section President

Section Meeting
We had our last section meeting on November 19, 2011 in Burbank with a good showing from chapters. We discussed the results of the Fall Conference. We had 155 attendees (15% administrators) and brought in $6,000 in profit. A survey we conducted showed that 80% of attendees rated the conference as excellent and another 18% rated it as good. The remaining 2% were upset because Chesty didn't show enough leg.

We had a discussion on how we schedule events at the conference and whether it aligns with what we feel is most important to CCAE and its members at this time. Specifically, if legislative action is the most important thing we do right now, then why did we put the legislative event (a panel for the past few years) at the end of the conference, where we had a small turnout. There was general agreement that we should consider this in next year's conference planning.

Almost 90% of attendees surveyed said they would like to have an overnight conference in Palm Springs. Additionally, 93% of attendees said they would like to have a one-day conference at a local school. We're still trying to figure that one out, but we are looking at pricing for a Palm Springs conference.

Fundraising
We continue to sell World's Finest Chocolate. The Downey Chapter has taken the lead and consolidated orders to all the CCAE logo to be put on the candy bar wrappers. This requires 100-box order at $25 per box (50 candies per box).

Communications—LISTSERV
We continue to use the South Coast Section LISTSERV more and more. We discussed ways to make removal from the LISTSERV an automated process for those wishing not to receive further emails.

Leg Meeting
On December 5, 2011, we had a local legislative meeting at Downey Adult School where we discussed actions that local adult schools could take to promote Adult Ed with their local representatives and school board members. We had a showing of about 15 individuals, about half were from LAM. Useful information was shared. There was a concern that not many people from South Coast Section had shown up to the meeting.

Currently, we are gearing up for Leg Day in March. Request for appointments with legislators will go out the week of February 6, 2012. Chapters are already forming their visiting teams. We will hold a meeting in the next few weeks to get these teams prepared for the day in Sacramento.

CCAE South Coast Section Report

October 15, 2011

Section Meeting
We had our last section meeting on September 17 with a good showing from chapters. We discussed AB 189 and the importance of supporting it through emails/letters to the governor through Assemblyman Eng's office. We also discussed the importance of continued communication with local representatives. To raise money specifically for legislative action we are planning a casino bus trip to a local casino.

Fundraising
Chapters are continuing to raise funds through a variety of ways including the sale of World's Finest Chocolate. Downey Chapter has taken the lead and consolidated orders in order to get the CCAE logo put on the candy bar wrappers. Requires 100 box order at $25 per box (50 candies per box).

Communication—LISTSERV
I shared with the section leadership team the new LISTSERV tool that Sharon Bonney set up and provided training for. It is very easy to use and has lots of capabilities (wish I had the time to play with them more). We've used it for a number of communications already. I'll be training the upcoming presidents on how to use the system in the near future. I also shared with the leadership team the three new "faces" for the CCAE website and pointed them to the survey to vote for their favorite.

Fall Conference
South Coast Section will be hosting its annual conference on October 29 at Hacienda La Puente. The theme is "21st Century Skills—Exploring New Frontiers". Currently, we have 44 registered for the conference with a little over 100 "promising" to go.

All information of each chapter is kept on our WIKI site at http://ccae.pbworks.com/. Each chapter will submit progress on the above items each month and it will then be posted on the WIKI site.
