The section is off to a slow start, as we have been able to meet only once thus far. In the interim we have been in contact via e-mail and changes and adjustments have been made as needed. Dawn Buboltz, of Chaffey Adult, resigned her position as Section Legislative Chair due to a change in job position and we were able to fill that position with Mike Neary, from San Bernardino Chapter. As his first official CCAE action, Mike will be attending the Oakland Board meeting.
We were saddened to have to forego our previous commitments of hosting a joint conference with South Coast. This was decided because of time constraints and uncertainty of available persons to assist. We are however, highly promoting attendance of the event by our members and each Chapter has been asked to pay for at least one member's registration to the one day event.
As a whole our Section will be holding at least one major event, most likely in the spring, recognize outstanding achievements by our members. We have also discussed the possibility of asking that each Chapter dedicate one fundraiser on behalf of the Section, as we will be low on funds, not having participated in the joint conference mentioned above.
The Southern Section is looking forward to working together with many many new, enthusiastic members, to promote CCAE growth throughout our area to regain the momentum we once possessed as a force for Adult Education in Southern California.
Grossmont Chapter
Vickie Gagliardi, Chapter President
During our first Board meeting of the year, the Grossmont Chapter set some pretty high goals for ourselves.
• Goal 1: Increase membership from 75 to 100
• Goal 2: Increase fundraising from $2,941 to $3,500
• Goal 3: Offer a winter and spring social event
Our big membership drive at the Back-to-School meeting brought us 71 members (15 of which are new members). Although our Adult School has experienced numerous changes in Administration, we are sending letters, making calls, and doing what we can to meet our membership goal during a time of uncertainty. The Chapter voted to double the number of $150 classroom grants offered this year from two to four. These grants are awarded to teachers in an effort to improve their classroom and learning environment as well as help increase membership in CCAE. Our winter social has been set for December 2, 2011. The Board will be discussing the details at our meeting next month.
PACE Chapter
Adriana Sanchez-Aldana, Chapter Representative, Member at Large
Sweetwater, UHSD
Spring's reassignment of the Director, Ramon Leyba, was rescinded in July. Mr. Leyba remains the director however; he will also be responsible for the district's categorical programs. We are delighted that he is still working with Adult Education. In addition, the two new education principals, Bernard Balany (National City Adult School) and Jan Godfery (she returns to adult education as the principal of Chula Vista Adult School) are excited to help the Adult Division create new and more effective ways that our program can better support the students on the 7–12 side of the district while maintaining services to the adult learners in the community. PACE currently has no events planned as we are in reorganization mode.
Riverside Chapter
Y. Thomas, Chapter President, Riverside Adult School
Our first meeting of the year was September 13, 2011. We reviewed our end-of-the-year monies from graduation fundraisers. We did better than expected. We confirmed our fundraisers for the 2011–2012 school years. We will be sending out an e-mail to encourage members to renew and get past members to rejoin. Our next meeting is November 8, 2011.
San Bernardino Chapter
Cynthia Stephens, Chapter President, San Bernardino Adult School
The San Bernardino Chapter got off to a slow start, but we are moving forward. We are proud to announce that we have over 50 members in our chapter. We have reviewed our financial status for the year and thanks to our fundraiser we will be sustained throughout the year. Meantime, in October, our social committee is planning a “breakfast” social for our teammates who enjoy the festivities of Halloween and/or eating. We haven't given any scholarships to supplement students as they attempt to pass their GED yet. We are a new bunch of adult educators willing to support the cause of CCAE.
Annette Beck has dedicated over 33 years of her life
to education and San Bernardino Unified School District. In 1977 Annette started with the San Bernardino
City School as an instructional assistant. During a
period of budget cuts in the 1970’s, Annette ended up
applying to a law office and was hired as office manager/receptionist. Realizing that she needed to know
how to type, she took a class with adult education. Within a year, Annette
reapplied, was hired, and returned to work in the school system. Over the
years, Annette progressed through the clerical ranks of clerk, senior clerk, and
vice principal secretary.
In 1996 Annette made a job decision that changed her life. She was asked at
her interview if she was "ready to grow up" and the next day started working
for San Bernardino Adult School as the vice principal’s secretary. With encouragement from then principal, George Bohn, and vice principal, Charlie
Brown, she went back to college, received her vocational teaching credential,
and began teaching Office Skills and QuickBooks. She loved making a difference with the students. One of Annette’s talents is her organizational skills
and, consequently, was asked to assist with the CALPRO Regional Resource
Center and also with the accountability testing at the school. Annette later
became the manager of the resource center located at the San Bernardino
Adult School. Annette was instrumental in setting up the CASAS E-Testing
Lab at the school which in turn, increased the school’s pay points by at least
50%. She also worked with CASAS as an e-Test presenter and managed the
regions accountability meetings.
CCAE has been very lucky to have Annette as an active member since 1996.
She has been involved in fundraisers, hosted Christmas parties at her home,
and served as the Chapter Vice President, Chapter President, Chapter Past
President, and Chapter Treasurer. Annette helped with many section conferences locally and in conjunction with South Coast CCAE Section, both chairing committees and presenting. Annette was the State Awards Chairperson
from 2005 to 2009 and in 2008 was very involved with the State Conference
hosted by the Southern Section in San Diego. She loves the many people
that she met through CCAE.
Annette stays busy by watching her grandchildren, spending time with her
husband, helping her daughter with the salon and day spa in which she is a
partner, administering GED tests, and accepting occasional requests to be a
substitute teacher. She will never really retire!
Charlotte Crandall has been employed at San
Bernardino Adult School for 14 years. She was
employed as a clerical aide in the school’s medical programs and her past supervisors were Principal Charlie Brown and Vice-Principal Janice
Roselius. Last year, her responsibilities included
reporting to three separate administrators and
departments to supply support to Staff, Academics, and Adults with Disabilities.
For the past 12 years, Charlotte has been an active member of CCAE. Charlotte served as chapter secretary twice. She served on the social committee
numerous times and did so with great joy and accomplishment. She assisted
with not only one, but two major conferences – one year with the South Coast/Southern Section Joint Conference and, in 2007, was on the conference planning committee for the CCAE state conference held in San Diego. Charlotte
has also served as CCAE Chapter Historian. In 2009–10, she was chapter
president, and in 2010, served as Legislative Day representative.
