Chris Nelson

Chris Nelson has been a teacher and an administrator for the past thirty-three years educating at-risk students and creating special programs designed primarily for adults. 

For the past nine years, Chris has been an administrator for Oakland Unified School District’s Adult and Career Education Program providing Adult Basic Education, GED and Career Technical Education training to adults in the community of Oakland.  Before his current assignment, he worked as an Administrator for Martinez Adult Education and Albany Adult School and taught for Mt. Diablo Adult Education.  Over twenty years ago, Chris founded and developed Episcopal Community Services of San Francisco Skills Center providing education, training and employment to over 1200 homeless and low income adults each year. 

Chris has been involved with CCAE since 1986 when he joined as a teacher.  Over the years, Chris was the Bay Section Legislation Chair, Bay Section President and now State Board President for the 2011–13 term.

Larriann Torrez is currently the Assistant Director for Tulare Adult School. Before employment with Tulare Joint Union High School District she was a Program Manager for Proteus, Inc. Larriann began her career in adult education in 1994 at Porterville Adult School and is still teaching evening GED and High School Diploma classes. Larriann has been involved with CCAE at the local, section, and state level and is now representing the Central Section on the State Board as President Elect.  She is the past recipient of the 2005 CCAE Charles O. Peterson Meritorious Service Award, the 2009 CCAE Caroline S. Casida Meritorious Leadership Award.

Mike Wada, who is the Principal of the Fremont-Washington Community Adult School in the Los Angeles Unified School District, has been in adult education for 35 years.  He is the past recipient of the 1992 CCAE Award of Merit, the 2008 CCAE Donald McCune Collaboration Award, and was recognized in 2007 by the Association of California School Administrators Region 16 as the Adult School Principal of the Year.

Sue is the Director of Adult Education for the Sacramento City Unified School District, a position she has held since 2010. Prior to assuming this position she was Principal, A. Warren McClaskey Adult Center in for 18 years. She was the Assistant Director of Special Education before beginning in adult education.  Sue taught at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge for 11 years before returning to Sacramento in 1979.  She received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from University of the Pacific and her Ph.D. from Ohio University.

Kathy Brendzal has been employed by the Montebello Unified School District since 1983, working entirely in the Adult Education Division, which she says is the only place she has ever wanted to be.  She has been a teacher, counselor, coordinator and administrator.

Since becoming a CCAE member in 1987, she has devoted an enormous amount of time and energy to this organization.  She has served in a variety of capacities at the Section, State and National levels, including Section President, Conference Chair and Leg chair; Secretary and Member-at-Large at the State level; and Co-Chair of the National Conference in Anaheim.  CCAE is truly where her heart is because it represents the entire spectrum of Adult Educators.

Adriana is currently the principal of Montgomery Adult School in the Sweetwater District in San Diego.  She began her career in adult education as an Instructional Assistant, worked her way into teaching full time, and then began working on special projects as a Teacher on Special Assignment.  In addition, she has worked at the state level as a teacher trainer and content specialist in federally funded staff development projects.  She has over 30 years of experience in adult education.

Darlene’s current assignment with LAUSD’s Division of Adult and Career Education is the CTE/Adult Perkins Advisor. Originally a LAUSD classified employee, she made the change to certificated status 8 years ago.  A CCAE member since 1999, Darlene has been continually active at the chapter, section and state level of the organization.  She has held all board positions in both the chapter and LAM section. Darlene has worked on numerous local LAM events and conferences as well as served on several state conference committees. Darlene has been the recipient of LAM’s 2002 Outstanding Classified Employee and the 2011 E. Manfred Evans Award. She is currently serving her third term as State Awards Chair.

Joanne Durkee is currently the Director of Mt. Diablo Adult Education, which is part of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District in central Contra Costa County.  Joanne has been an adult educator since 1978 and an administrator since 1996.  She has had some involvement with all adult education programs areas, with more specific expertise and involvement in Career Technical Education and working with special population students.    She has been actively engaged in local workforce development, including representing adult education on the Contra Costa Workforce Development Board, Contra Costa One Stop Operator Consortium, the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce Education Committee Chair, the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce Board, the Contra Costa Council Workforce Development/Education Task Force, and the Contra Costa Council. In 1998 Joanne was awarded the CCAE Donald A. McCune collaboration Award and in the George C. Mann Award in 2010.  Joanne has been Bay Section Secretary, Bay Section Leg Chair, State Board Secretary, and is currently State Leg Chair.

Sally Fowler, current Central Section President, has been active in adult education for over 18 years and involved in CCAE leadership at the local, section and state level. Sally began her adult education experience as a Guidance Learning Director for Fresno Adult School working with the High School and Career Technical Education Programs.  She has served as a Vice Principal, Assistant Principal and is currently the Principal at Fresno Adult School. She co-chaired the 2007 State CCAE Conference and is co-chair of our 2012 State CCAE Conference, “The Great CCAE Round-Up” to be held in Fresno, May 3–5, 2012.

 

 
     
 

John Ballinger

After a 39 year career as a high school social science teacher, coach, and school administer, John retired this past June following an eleven year stint (2001–2011) as the Director of Clovis Adult Education.  He remains a member of ACSA, CAEAA, and is still actively involved in the Central Section.  John was the CCAE Central Section President in 2006–07, and along with Sally Fowler (Director of Fresno Adult School) and Marie Pinto (former Director of Tulare Adult School, served as co-chair of the infamous 2007 “Wild About Adult Education” state conference held in Fresno.

Chesty Peterson began his teaching career at Downey Adult School in 1975 teaching grocery cashiering. He began part time and became full time in 1986 when he started teaching computer applications and office skills. He joined CCAE in 1976 and throughout the years he has been heavily involved in Chapter, Section, and State levels of the organization. He maintains a tax preparation business that he really enjoys. He has received numerous awards from each level of CCAE including the most cherished "Excellence in Teaching." Chesty retired in 2010, but still maintains an office at Downey Adult School.
