Bio Alma Blanco has been a dedicated educator for 30 years, with 19 years of service at Abram Friedman Occupational Center (AFOC). She chose to become a teacher because she wanted to give back all that she didn't receive when she was a student. Alma's dedication to her students extends to her work in the classroom, where she has demonstrated a passion for teaching and a commitment to student success. She is a knowledgeable and skilled educator who uses innovative teaching methods to engage her students and help them to achieve their full potential. Her classroom is a welcoming and supportive environment where students feel empowered to learn and grow. She places great importance on cultural awareness and participates in events that recognize Black History Month, Dia de los Muertos, Halloween, Cinco de Mayo, and more. She also teaches tolerance and diversity and creates and supports leadership opportunities for her students.
As an advisor for the AFOC SkillsUSA team for 15 years, Alma has shown exceptional dedication to her students and has been instrumental in their success. Alma has gone to nationals three times to support her students in competition. In addition to her work in the classroom and with the AFOC team, Alma is an active member of the community and works tirelessly to promote the value of career and technical education. She has volunteered her time to speak at community events and promote the importance of skilled trades, and has been a strong advocate for her students and their futures. She meets with her students at hair expos and shows on her personal time to expose them to current trends in the industry, she participates in accreditation focus groups at AFOC and volunteers at St. Mark's Church's food bank in Venice, CA.
Alma's dedication to her students, her commitment to excellence in teaching, and her service to the community make her an exceptional candidate for the CCAE Excellence in Teaching Award. She is a true leader and an inspiration to her colleagues and students alike. Alma mentors students who have completed the program and makes herself available for former students who need help with preparation for the state board exam. Former student Jenna Atkins, who is now a cosmetologist for the Kardashians, is a guest speaker who Alma brings back to motivate her students.
