Excellence in Teaching

Ana Stephens

Ana Stephens' journey to becoming a teacher in the Allied Health Academy at the Pittsburg Adult School (PAEC) began about 18 years ago with an on-the-job injury at a medical facility. With the assistance of Worker’s Compensation, she enrolled in the Business Training Center at the Martinez Adult School and learned Medical Coding, Insurance Billing, Health and Information Management, and Medical Terminology.

Upon meeting and getting to know Ana Stephens, you will see why she is a Teacher of Excellence at the Pittsburg Adult Education Center. Ana exudes an aura of positivity, dedication and commitment to her students, support to other staff members, and passion for the subjects she teaches. She works tirelessly to provide student-centered learning in her classes and to empower and mentor other teachers in the Career Technical Education program.

After completing her training at the Business Training Center, she was hired as a Teacher’s Assistant at the Martinez Adult School (MAS). Then three years later, she became a full-time Medical Coding teacher and taught for five years until the budget cuts in 2009. In 2008, the Pittsburg Adult Education Center was fortunate to be able to hire Ana as a part-time Medical Coding teacher, and in 2015 she became a full-time teacher.

Ana was instrumental in developing the Allied Health Academy at PAEC, where she created a comprehensive pathway of classes in the health care support field. The Allied Health Academy is one of the shining stars in the Career Technical Education Department at PAEC. It offers classes such as Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Office Skills, Insurance Billing and Health Information Management, Medical Calculations, Beginning and Advanced Medical Coding, Medical First Responder, Certified Nursing Assistant, National Certification Review for Medical Coding and Billing, CPR and First Aid.

Since the establishment of the Allied Health Academy in 2008, 90% of students in the program have been nationally certified as Professional Coders. With Ana’s support and assistance, PAEC’s Job Developer has contracted with several health care organizations to establish internships for our Allied Health Academy students.
