Bio Evelyn has been teaching English as a Second Language at Huntington Beach Adult School for the past eight years, and is the EL Civics Coordinator. She has taught all levels of ESL, in addition to Reading & Writing for GED Preparation, Grammar & Pronunciation for Job Preparation, and Pronunciation & Conversation. She also works with the administration on department planning and is routinely called upon to provide training for both the seasoned staff and new teachers and substitutes. In her role as EL Coordinator, she is responsible for developing and preparing all EL Civics Curriculum and assessments. She also oversees the growing IET program, and has written several new IET COAAPs.
Evelyn always established a personal connection with her students. They love her and love learning from her. She makes the class both fun and demanding. She delivers English instruction to both her in-person and online students simultaneously. Evelyn's excellent teaching skills are evidenced by her students' retention and achievements. She regularly attends workshops, meetings, and conferences, and participates in many professional development opportunities in order to improve her ability to teach and help her students. Evelyn is dedicated to helping her students succeed...and they do!
Evelyn uses the personal connection she develops with her students to help them gain the confidence they need to be successful. She makes them feel comfortable even while they are being challenged. As a result, her students are more confident in using their English skills outside of the classroom and become more involved with their families and communities. Evelyn has a very positive effect on all of her students. They often begin attending her class timid, afraid, and unprepared to use their English in their personal lives. However, they leave her class feeling assured that they can successfully communicate with anyone they need to in their families, work settings, neighborhoods, and communities.
