Downey Adult School’s CCAE Chapter is pleased to recognize Gale Mejico for the Excellence in Teaching Award. Gale is a definite asset to the Downey Adult School family and we are truly fortunate to have had her as a part of our faculty since 2006. She began her career here as an instructor for the CNA program. Within months of taking on that assignment, she moved on to be the lead vocational nurse instructor, teaching both theory and hands-on skills to her vocational nursing students. Gale goes above and beyond to fulfill her teaching duties and serves as a role model, advocate, and mentor for her students. Gale began her educational career at Concord College where she received her LVN training in 1997. She went on to receive her AA in Nursing at Mount Saint Mary’s College in 2005. Gale also obtained her RN license in 2005. She continued her education at the University of San Diego, where she earned her teaching credential. Gale is exceptionally skilled at applying theory to practice, and she vehemently encourages her students to participate in community events. She is called upon repeatedly by Downey Unified School District as well as neighboring communities to participate in events such as the manning of first aid stations at district track meets, performing sports physicals at various local high schools, and administering blood pressure and glucose screenings at community health fairs for the transitional/homeless community. Ms. Mejico remains in contact will all of her previous students and reaches out to them on a regular basis with job opportunities, through social media, texting, and emails. After graduation, she sends out information necessary to assist them in passing the NCLEX exam. She has established new policies and procedures to ensure that her students have every opportunity to prepare for the exam. She is a strong advocate for her students and encourages and supports them in continuing their education, if that is one of their goals.
Gale has been an active CCAE member for eight years, and is especially supportive of our school’s fundraising efforts. She has participated in nominating and recognizing outstanding students at our annual award luncheons. She is constantly encouraging Downey Adult School students to become CCAE members and involving them in the organization and its benefits. Gale has recently been recognized by the City of Hawaiian Gardens for being a founding member and participant in the “Activate Hawaiian Gardens Initiative”. She has also been recognized by the All Pro Health Center, for her enthusiastic participation in the health physicals for high school athletes. Gale, along with her students, have been steadfast participants in Tri-City regional health fairs since 2011.
She has assisted the local community and served as a role model and Troop leader for a local Girl Scout troop. She has been instrumental in coordinating and chairing their cookie drive, making it an overwhelming success. Gale is a founding member of the Color Guard Parent Support Group at Cerritos High School, providing assistance to the students and faculty.
