Gloria is a proud graduate of Belmont High School in Los Angeles. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree from Cal State University, Los Angeles, in 1974, with a double major in Spanish and Chicano Studies. During her time at Cal State L.A., she also studied at the prestigious Universidad National Autonoma de Mexico in Mexico City. After completing her degree, she went on to earn a lifetime teaching credential, also from Cal State University, Los Angeles.
Gloria worked at LAUSD for 21 years in the ESL program. She was in the CBET program for the majority of those years. She moved to Downey Adult School in 1995 and started the CBET program in 14 elementary schools throughout the city of Downey. She continued to teach ESL at Downey Adult School until her retirement in 2014.
Gloria was very instrumental in developing the CBET program at Downey Adult School. It was a very successful program thanks to the experience and innovation that Gloria brought with her. Workshops that she has presented throughout the state have helped to improve staff knowledge in many areas of ESL and CBET. In addition, she developed a very successful ESL and Citizenship Distance Learning program for DAS, which allows students to study at home with DVD’s and study-at-home packets, meeting with instructors at least once a week. Gloria also had a very faithful and appreciative following in her beginning ESL, Writing, Pronunciation, and Grammar classes.
Gloria has held various CCAE positions at the Downey Chapter level including: President, Vice President, Legislative Chair, Fundraising Chair, and Membership Chair. Upon her retirement in early 2014, Gloria expressed her desire to continue to be an active member of CCAE and has continued to return to DAS on a voluntary basis to contribute to our ongoing success. She has attended several Legislative Days, advocating for the Adult Education cause. Gloria has also conducted many workshops at section and state conferences. She is recognized statewide for her excellent presentations at these conferences.
