Nancy Castaneda |
Bio Nancy started a floral design program in Adult Education in 2005 and continued until 2020. She has taught ESL and Citizenship, Reading, Writing and HSE. Currently she works in an ESL co-enrolled program with ABE and HSE.
In CTE Nancy wrote the curriculum for three levels of floral design aligning it with Perkins requirements for the industry. She had the opportunity to work on a panel of educators to develop a national floral design test for NOCTI . She represented the West Coast on the panel. The development was finally completed after three years. She also worked under a grant through CYROP adult education called CTE Teach., where she attended extensive mentor training. After training, she and other mentor teachers gave district workshops to educators. Her specialty areas were classroom management and teaching strategies. Nancy started teaching GED and soon discovered the need for student scholarships. She started recruiting community members and organizations to sponsor scholarships for floral students as well as paying for the cost of taking GED tests.
Floral design students were able to obtain jobs and classes were expanded. Because of her experience and connections in the industry, her students were able to have access to Floral Design Workshops for no cost. The normal cost per training class was $150. In HSE students attain a high school equivalency and are able to successfully attain full time jobs, enter college, or enter the military. Nancy was the first to start in an ESL/ABE-HSE program in Sweetwater Adult Education. She soon set her evaluation goal to align with the needs of those students. After examining over 200 writing samples of ESL students, she was able to quickly determine the specific common mistakes of the two primary languages spoken in the area. (Tagalog and Spanish). Those needs were addressed in adjusting the curriculum to focus on those areas. After implementation, student level promotions and CASAS gains increased. The number of English GED completers has also increased.
Nancy belongs to PEO Chapter XU in Chula Vista . It is a Philanthropy Education Organization that supports women with scholarships at an International, State, and Local level. At the local level the chapter supports GED students. Nancy received Teacher of the Year Award in 2011.
