Bio
G. Vittoria Abbate is known for going above and beyond, dedicating herself to service to adult learners. Her career trajectory started as an ESL instructor and included becoming Coordinator for the ESL/Citizenship Department, Vice Principal, Assistant Director and in 2015 she became the Director of Mt. Diablo Adult Education. At all levels, she has promoted the work of adult education and its importance in making communities stronger.
Vittoria has a keen understanding of the importance of strong effective partnerships with community organizations. She has served as the Adult Education Representative on the Contra Costa County Workforce Development Board and as a Board Member of the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce. She became well versed on all aspects of WIOA. When the Workforce Development Board of Contra Costa County moved to outsource their adult and youth services, Vittoria envisioned an opportunity for collaboration that built on the strengths of many organizations, as well as ensure continued involvement of adult schools across the County. She brought the myriad of organizations together to encourage a partnership bid to the County’s RFP. The bid was successful and several adult schools now host America’s Job Center of California (AJCC) sites.
As Director, she has co-chaired the Consortium Steering Committee since 2015, leading and supporting a myriad of governance and organizational challenges and changes. Additionally, she has been a member of regional committees to focus on ensuring more coordinated data systems that provide appropriate data points for K12 Adult Education. Her leadership has been focused on developing and strengthening collaboration and being a voice for the unique needs of K12 Adult Education students. Vittoria is also a member of Mt. Diablo Unified School District’s Superintendent’s Cabinet.
Vittoria has always been actively engaged in local CCAE events, including assisting with CCAE State Conferences when Bay Section was hosting. She ultimately became Bay Section Leg Chair and did an excellent job in organizing advocacy efforts within the Section. In 2015 she stepped into the role of State Leg Chair and will always be known for bringing statewide legislative work to a new level. She improved communication strategies and increased the use of technology for tracking contacts and appointments with State Legislators. Additionally, she streamlined access to identified advocacy pieces for preparation for and implementation of the annual CCAE/CAEAA Legislative Day in Sacramento. Her encouragement also expanded the use and availability of Adult School Report Cards (aka Program Fact Sheets) to share with legislators.
As State Leg Chair, she participated in weekly joint CCAE and CAEAA legislative/budget priorities discussions with Dawn Koepke, often highlighting the ‘boots on the ground’ perspective. During statewide COVID-19 “Stay at Home” orders, she took a leadership role by actively participating in the planning and broadcasting of several Zoom webinars on topics related to new legislative information (updates) and continued local advocacy using Zoom and other video-conferencing tools. Consistently willing to support new Section Legislative Chairs and share her experiences with them, CCAE members know that they can turn to Vittoria for advice and support.
True to the Rupert legacy, Vittoria spends endless hours managing a school site and a county consortium. Vittoria is consummate professional with natural people skills and her intuitive leadership style has earned her tremendous respect and admiration amongst her staff, district and CCAE family.
