Bio
In 1999, John S. Werner came into education as a high school English teacher, then moved up to being a department chair and a union Rep. Moving along, he became a Vice Principal of Curriculum and Instruction for continuing education, then in 2013 he burst onto the adult ed scene as Vice Principal of Visalia Adult School and by 2015 was named Principal. One year later in 2016 he took over as Director of Sequoia Adult Education Consortium.
Everybody knows and loves John, but the following is from Past CCAE State President, Steve Curiel who outlined John perfectly.
“John has been a collaborator from the day he first came to Adult Education during the years of Fund 11 flexibility. John quickly began attending both CCAE and CAEAA conferences and connecting with administrators to learn as much as he could and as quickly as he could. He also became known as an outside-the-box thinker in advocating for adult education and the students he served. His enthusiasm and thinking were quickly recognized by CCAE leaders both in the Section and in the State and John would soon become one of those leaders himself.
In an effort to do the most good for his students and Adult Education, John stepped into leadership roles at both the chapter and section level and eventually at the State level where he is recognized as a go to leader for ideas and recommendations on all things Adult Ed. Probably the most time and energy consuming task one can take on in CCAE is that of Chair for the State Conference. John took on this task during some of the most challenging times for Adult Education and helped make the conference one of the most successful in CCAE history. People to this day still talk about the bull riding, taco trucks, and Grizzlies baseball game in Fresno. John basically brought the Central Valley to the State Conference!
As the Central Section President John was able to significantly grow membership and build up future leaders to continue the momentum for the Central Section. As a Section representative for CCAE and regional representative for COABE, John has also had a voice on their respective boards. His insightful input and sharing of ideas and practices between organizations has made them each stronger. Those that know John across the Adult Ed world (including beyond California through COABE) know John to be full of choice phrases. John can be credited with “Adult Education – That’s a big deal” and you can’t go to a meeting without hearing “I got this.” This just reaffirms John’s commitment to getting things done for Adult Education.
As the State President for CAEAA, John has made it a priority to maintain a great working relationship with CCAE. He often reminds us in our combined legislative team Tuesday phone call meetings, that we are stronger together, with one unified voice. John also actively engages with his local state legislative representatives to promote CCAE and CAEAA as the voices for Adult Education and is always thinking about other agencies and stakeholders that would make good strategic partners.”
Finally, Steve notes, “I could go on regarding both John’s leadership and collaborative successes but I’ll finish by saying that John is just a good person and a good person is fundamental to being an effective leader and collaborator.”
