“The last five years in adult education have been something else.” As John Werner likes to say - “We completely rebuilt this plane mid-air. Very few people can truly claim that. They talk about having done it, but all they have really done is kind of get the same old airplane running a little smoother. We completely redefined the adult education delivery system.” This rebuild has occurred with the assistance of one of the State’s lead adult education mechanics.
In not quite seven years in the adult education “airfield”, John has held the professional role of Assistant Principal (Curriculum and Instruction), Principal, and Consortium Director. He has also been the CCAE Central Section President for nearly four years, CAEAA president-elect and current President, and the ACSA Region 11 Adult Education Council Representative. During this time, he has received the ACSA Adult Administrator Award (2015) and the Central Section’s David Eschelman Award (2018) for his exceptional contributions to CCAE and Adult Education.
Titles and awards aside - John is a hands-on, all-in doer. As a site administrator in 2014, he coordinated with the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office to provide high school equivalency to inmates, and helped in their implementation of online GED testing. In mid-2015, he gave an interview on the California Report (KQED) and shared the importance of adult education to the overall economic health and stability of the Central Valley. John tirelessly advocates to local and state leadership for their support of adult education and works to maintain a unified voice for adult education advocacy at the student, staff, city, county, and state level. He works with the local WiB, CBOs, county and city development managers, maintains active relationships with local and state legislators. He actively collaborated with legislative advocate partner McHugh, Koepke, and Associates as well as CCAE and CAEAA leadership to develop and implement the CCAE legislative platform. The group also worked together to pass a joint board resolution between CCAE and CAEAA that outlines their efforts moving forward.
John often calls the impact that adult education makes on the lives of its students a “big deal”. As he stated in an interview about an award he was receiving, “So the big deal going around isn’t what I have done, it is what adult education is doing to better the lives of those around us. The big deal is the importance of our adult education programs to a population who needs it desperately. That is the big deal.” We disagree. You’re a big deal for adult education, John Werner.
