She has written curriculum and taught teachers best practices and instructional strategies for working with adult students with developmental disabilities (Life Skills Program), Autism Spectrum Disorder (Transition Options program, TOPS) and Acquired Brain Injury (On Track.) Her expertise in these areas is well-known, and she is often contacted by out-of-area AWD programs for her professional guidance.
In 2012, Karen created a partnership with the State Department of Developmental Services and the Regional Center of East Bay that secured approximately $220,000 per year to maintain these programs. Karen’s professionalism, caring, and dedication to improving the lives of adult learners who have a disability have made many adult learners more independent, confident, and inspired.
Karen has presented at CCAE Bay and State Conferences sharing information about low-tech assistive technology, career preparation, and workplace training for adults with disabilities, classroom management, and behavioral support strategies. Her dedication to adult
education has been demonstrated by having occupied every position in the CCAE Contra Costa Chapter including President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Awards Chair and Fundraising Chair. In 2011, she was on the conference committee for the CCAE State Conference held in San Francisco. For many of Karen’s Adult Education colleagues in Contra Costa County, she has become the go-to person because of her broad knowledge base and years of experience in teaching and working with Adults with Disabilities.
