With a Master's degree, Metallurgical Engineering, Robert Yorgason has demonstrated extraordinary service in his 24 years in the CTE field of Networking / Cyber Security. Each student that enters his classroom receives an immediate one-on-one session, during which his/her individual skills are assessed. Mr. Yorgason then outlines a plan for each student so he/she can work independently and in a group. Since the Networking / Cyber Security class attracts individuals of varying backgrounds, it requires the instructor to know and meet the individual needs of all his students. While Mr. Yorgason knows his students’ subject matter skills, he also knows their personal struggles and goes out of his way to provide students with needed services, even when outside of the classroom. In recent years, the Venice Skills Center has attracted the homeless population, and Mr. Yorgason has gone beyond to meet their needs in and out of the classroom. Mr. Yorgason has collaborated closely with Advisors to gather information on available services in the community such as free food, free Wi-Fi, and case management. In addition to this, Mr. Yorgason has been a great supporter of SkillsUSA and has motivated his students to participate in these competitions. Just this year, Mr. Yorgason guided two of his students through the SkillsUSA competition. One of the students took Silver and the other student took Gold. Mr. Yorgason will be taking the student that won Gold to the National SkillsUSA competitions in Atlanta Georgia.
Mr. Yorgason has had a positive impact on students’ learning. Mr. Yorgason meets with industry professionals, collaborates closely with potential employers, and works extremely hard to obtain externship opportunities for his students. Last year the Venice Skills Center held a summer program for Cyber Security. The classroom only had sixteen spots and so to ensure participation by committed individuals, Mr. Yorgason worked closely with the CTE Advisor to develop a skills assessment, an informative orientation, and the application of the TABE Reading test. Mr. Yorgason’s class attracted seniors, immigrants, locals, and WorkSource and Job Corps participants. Mr. Yorgason found a way to connect with each potential student. When at the end of the assessment and orientation process we learned that we had twenty-two interested and qualifying potential students, Mr. Yorgason rearranged his classroom, and updated numerous systems to accommodate the six additional students. The program was an enormous success with a high retention and attendance rate. In addition, Mr. Yorgason consistently participates in Professional Development opportunities relating to Cisco, Cyber Security, Networking, as well as online teaching and virtual communication.
Mr. Yorgason has made significant contributions to our school and with the Adult Education community. This school year Mr. Yorgason has a split schedule, which causes an almost six-hour daily break. However, to address the needs of our students, Mr. Yorgason remains in the classroom and supports all students who need additional practice and assistance. When two years ago we had a Job Fair, during which we hoped to recruit our ESL, ABE and ASE students for the Networking program, Mr. Yorgason created a networking system that he assembled in the rotunda so each and every attendee was able to not only see the system but was able to also click on buttons to see change take place. In addition, Mr. Yorgason had devoted himself entirely to the creation of the Cyber Security course outline, a subject matter not many are familiar with, and even fewer offers. Mr. Yorgason consistently works to put Adult Education on the map. He is an educator extraordinaire, a student and teacher advocate, and an incredible being who fights daily to offer opportunity to our students.
