Bio
With a BA in Social Science and a MA in Business Administration, Steve Curiel has been well-positioned to lead the field in collaborative endeavors. During his term as CCAE State President, he initiated our Strategic Planning process. Working with the VIANOVA group to facilitate the plan, he brought all sections together thus enabling CCAE to closely examine our goals and our practices and to align them to our mission statement. Throughout his tenure with CCAE, Steve has shown remarkable insight into legislative issues that affect all students, teachers, and administrators in Adult Education. He took on the task of reading, analyzing, and assessing many of the bills that have been introduced in the California state legislature. For example, working with CDE he delved deeply into the California State Education Code and found sections of the code that needed revision or that were outdated and needed to be stricken. Steve has worked closely with Dawn Koepke, our CCAE Legislative Advocate on many legislative projects and has participated in many legislative panel discussions giving updates to the field at both Section and State conferences. In addition to being very dedicated to CCAE and our mission, Steve has also been very active in our partner organization, the California Adult Education Administrators' Association (CAEAA), where he currently holds the position of Vice President/Legislation.
Steve’s career in adult education began in 2000 at Downey Adult School. There he oversaw their expansive Career Technical Education program, their very successful High School Diploma program, and varied Health and Safety and Fee-Based programs. He left Downey to take an administrator position at Huntington Beach Adult School (HBAS) in 2008 where he became Principal in 2010. Steve has broad experience in all areas of adult education, with a strong background in fiscal operations, information technology, marketing, and government regulations, funding and business collaborations. Steve has served CCAE at all levels of the organization. At the local level, Steve served as the Chapter President at the Huntington Beach Adult School Chapter, helping the chapter remain strong during some rough times. The CCAE South Coast Section also benefited from Steve's leadership where he was the Section President from 2011 to 2012. He started his six years of State level CCAE service as President Elect to President to Past President from 2016 to 2021.
