Dinner with Gordon Jackson

January 18, 2012 was the night of our dinner meeting where Gordon Jackson gave a talk over dinner; Moving Forward: California’s Strategic Plan [Adult Education]. The dinner was well attended with 52 paid reservations. CCAE State President, Chris Nelson, attended along with students, teachers, administrators and friends of Adult Education. A large contingent of Adult Education students were in the audience demonstrating their interest in CCAE and giving us a chance to recruit new members.

November 16 General Mixer
The Northern Section hosted a mixer at On the Border in Elk Grove in support of our efforts to recruit new members and also to give current members a chance to get together for an evening of appetizers and light conversation. Pat Terry, Adult Education Administrator, CDE, joined the fun and gave us all an opportunity to meet and talk with her about Adult Education and CCAE. The Section recruited several new members at the mixer. Click here for more photos of the event.
Leg Day Planning
Cris Johnson is making plans for Northern Section participation in Legislation activities in March 2012. He has begun organizing members and even recruited his own replacement when he assumes the Northern Section Presidency in July 2012. Patty Bradshaw will take over for Cris as the Northern Section Legislation Chair. Welcome Patty.
Membership
Northern Section membership has seen a significant increase over the past few months. We have added 38 individual members and 2 institutional members since the October 2011 membership census. Thanks to all who have worked hard to rebuild section membership. Special thanks to Chris Nelson for attending our events.
Section Conference
A May 19, 2012 Northern Section mini conference is in the planning stages in partnership with OTAN; details will be published in March 2012.
State Conference 2013
Planning for the CCAE State Conference are still in the early stages. Respectfully submitted, The Sacramento Sheraton Hotel has been contracted to serve as the venue for the conference and planning committee work will move into full swing in the weeks ahead. Northern Section will be assisted in planning by our Executive Director and others who we thank for the support.
Respectfully Submitted,
Dennis P. Flynn
President, CCAE Northern Section
Chris was invited to stay for a section board meeting following the mixer and he provided information regarding a CCAE State Board offer of assistance to secure a 2013 State Conference hosted by the Northern Section.
Activities to encourage membership in the Northern Section are ongoing. Board members have been actively recruiting colleagues to join the organization and it appears that those efforts are beginning to bear fruit. New memberships and membership renewals have been increasing as section officers talk with colleagues about legislation and the important role of CCAE in preserving funding for Adult Education. Membership numbers have yet to be confirmed but I anticipate positive results from our efforts. An opportunity drawing was held at the mixer to award a year's membership and other prizes.
Northern Section State Conference 2013 Planning
The main agenda item for the September meeting was a further discussion of the section's capacity to host the CCAE State Conference in 2013. Chris provided assurances to the Northern Section Board of logistical support from the State Board in planning and hosting the conference. Board members asked for further information regarding the planning requirements for the conference. I offered to gather more detailed information and rescheduled the next board meeting to October 12, 2011. Prior to the meeting, I contacted Sally Fowler, Central Section, for information regarding their planning for the 2012 State Conference. Sally graciously provided a task list and timeline which I provided to the board. With this additional information, the board agreed to begin planning for the 2013 CCAE State Conference!
January 18, 2012 Dinner Meeting
Planning has begun for a dinner meeting on January 18, 2012 to be held at the University of Pacific in Stockton. We hosted a meeting there with Jeff Frost in 2009 and it was very well attended.
May 2012 Awards
The section plans to host an awards banquet on May 19, 2012 at the Sacramento County Office of Education.
Have you ever asked your co-workers or friends for help, only to have them fail you at the last minute? Well, that wouldn’t have happened had you asked Nancy Compton.
Nancy began her career with Sacramento City Unified School District as an Administrative Secretary. While working, she put herself through school and earned her teaching credential.
She retired from Sacramento City Unified School District as an Administrative Secretary and came back to teach. She taught ROP office careers and ESL in Adult Education. Teaching was the beginning of her career in Adult Education. She served as an ESL and CBET coordinator. She spent the last 5 years of her career as Principal of Charles A. Jones Career & Education Center.
Nancy joined CCAE in 1992. She was very supportive of everything CCAE did. She always had an endless supply of students willing to participate in Leg Day. She chaired two state conferences held in Sacramento. She was able to retain WASC certification for six years, twice with no midterm review. Nancy was Northern Section President for two years. Before becoming President of Northern Section she held a number of offices, chaired numerous professional development activities and organized numerous celebratory activities. Additionally she chaired the CCAE state conference twice.
Ms. Compton obtained her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Vermont; her Master of Arts degree at the University of San Francisco; and her Administrative Credential at California State University, Sacramento, California.
Nancy has since gone into retirement, but she is far from “retired”. She stays active spending about half of the year in Florida with her son and grand-daughter and half in Sacramento with her children and grandchildren.
